“Merry Kissmas, colema?”
Spa Samui staff member 25th Dec 08

This has not been a traditional Christmas for me.  The sunshine and beach are now pretty well established in my routine.
Service staff braving the heat in red pom pom hats, impressive tree and light displays and hotels with gala dinners.

The additional element this time was a ‘cleanse’.  The cleanse is 7 day programme and Christmas is a good time for me to
get away and not be missed!  It involves drinking several slushy drinks a day and taking herb capsules.  There’s also
meditation, yoga and a series of talks from visiting practitioners.  If you have the inclination (and room), there are additional
juices and broths, but no food.  Oh and did I mention 2 coffee colonics a day?...

Shit Happens at Spa Resorts!
I found the stuff I cleaned out quite shocking so no pictures from me and that’s not what I’m
regarding as my Christmas present!  The results I was really happy to get didn’t appear until the
final days of the fast, they were…

~  feeling lighter in my body, less clicking and creaking in my joints, less tension in my muscles
~  needing less sleep and not feeling tired during the day
~  feeling energised, ‘zesty’ and even more positive than usual
~  clear radiant skin
~  greater sensitivity to smells, flavours and emotions.

Interestingly I didn’t loose lots of weight but some did come off from healthy eating post fast.
Speaking to others at the spa and since returning to Bangkok, these results are quite common.
It’s quite interesting hanging out in the spa café seeing who else is mad
enough to fast over Christmas.  I travelled with a friend who did her own
fast, eating only raw food.  She was amazed at the way relative strangers
were soon comparing notes on the colonic ‘results’ and sharing intimate
details.  For me it was like being on some kind of tour and discussing the
scenery- only the scenery was a little different to your average trip!  You
can get some idea of the outputs and process at

My first food post fast
To me, my experiences illustrated the strength of the interconnections of my mind and body.  My digestion relates to muscle
tension, mood and energy.  Letting go of the past is about releasing everything I no longer need- emotions, waste, toxins.
My experience also challenged some of my long held beliefs- for example that I have to have regular balanced meals to feel
energised or that joint mobility is mainly related to genetics, exercise and age.

Many experts have different views on cleansing and I can see that it wouldn’t fit neatly with the western view of medicine.
My opinions are based on my direct experience and that of others around me.  I believe the stuff I was releasing had been in
my body a long time.  If there was a ‘natural’ way for my body to cleanse, I think it would have done so (I have done other
juice fasts and detoxes).  The results of this felt good, I had reached a new level of health.

Before the cleanse I wasn’t aware of feeling heavy or being particularly spotty.  I did know I needed lots of sleep compared to
others but I felt pretty healthy.  I guess my body had adapted and compensated over time so my idea of healthy was less
than the feeling of health that I can have.  Being adaptable is both a blessing, because it enables life to continue ‘as normal’
and a hindrance as it’s then difficult to see how far you are from where you’d like to be.  This fast has really given me a
reference point of where I’d like to be this year.  I’ve seen what’s possible and had hints that even more could follow.

It’s been about a month since the fast and I’m still experimenting with the kind of diet and supplements that work best for
me.   I can’t say I’ve stuck to the raw food diet recommended, but I do feel differently about things I previously felt
compelled to eat, like my digestion’s been 'reset', and with the post fast me fresh in my mind, I’m making better choices.

In Asia we’re privileged to have an abundance of spas offering different cleanses.  A friend in the UK got similar results from
self administered process (no colonics) from Blessed herbs (see above) and I really like
Pamela Serure’s 3 Day Juice Fast as
a starter, it combines self reflection with the fasting.

We spring clean our homes, why not our bodies, and minds?
